The IRFU has been awarded Investors in Diversity Gold, the highest level of accreditation from the Irish Centre for Diversity, becoming the first sporting organisation in Ireland to achieve the distinction.

The recognition places the IRFU among just 41 organisations nationally to hold the Gold standard accreditation, acknowledging sustained work to embed fairness, respect, equality, diversity and inclusion across the organisation and throughout Irish rugby.

The award reflects efforts spanning the full structure of the sport, from grassroots clubs through to high-performance teams, as well as the governing body’s internal administration and governance structures.

An independent assessment carried out as part of the accreditation process highlighted the scale and ambition of the IRFU’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives.

Assessors cited the organisation’s comprehensive EDI Action Plan, which sets out a framework for fostering a more inclusive culture throughout the game. The report also recognised the impact of the IRFU’s Women’s Rugby Strategy, which outlines a long-term vision for increasing gender equity in participation, visibility and leadership across the sport.

Further areas highlighted in the assessment included governance structures designed to ensure EDI accountability at leadership level, policies supporting employee wellbeing and workplace culture, and funding programmes that help clubs access training and development in diversity and inclusion.

The review also pointed to partnerships with equality organisations that are contributing to wider cultural and policy change within rugby.

“We are incredibly proud to receive Investors in Diversity Gold,” said Anne-Marie Hughes, Head of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion with the IRFU.

“This accreditation reflects the commitment and collaboration of people across Irish rugby — players, coaches, volunteers, staff and stakeholders — who continue to help us foster a game and a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected and able to belong.”

Aileen Bailey, Chief People Officer with the IRFU, described the recognition as an important step in a continuing journey.

“Gold is an important milestone, but it is also a motivator,” she added. “Our EDI journey is ongoing, and we will continue working with clubs, communities and partners to deliver meaningful, lasting progress for the sport.”

“Irish Rugby Football Union’s progress to Investors in Diversity Gold has been impressive,” said Caroline Cummins, Managing Director of the Irish Centre for Diversity.

“Bronze laid the foundations, Silver ensured the voice of all colleagues shaped belonging, and now the IRFU rightly celebrates achieving Gold. We look forward to supporting the next chapter of their journey.”

The Investors in Diversity programme provides a three-tier accreditation framework designed to help organisations embed inclusive practices and culture while supporting continuous improvement.
