It is less than two weeks away and the next generation of Irish sporting stars have given pointers towards the prospect of this being Ireland’s most successful ever Summer Olympic Games.

Six Irish crews went to the World U23 Championships in the Czech Republic over the past few days and all of them reached finals. Two were B Finals but four were the best of the best and two of the teams came home with Silver medals showing the strength in depth we have within the sport in Ireland at the moment.

Ross Corrigan, John Kearney, Alex Byrne and Jack Dorney won a Silver Medal in the M4- A Final, finishing behind Canada but ahead of Britain to record a second-place finish.

This followed the Coxed Men’s Four who won Silver in the A Final on Saturday afternoon. Finn O’Reilly, Andrew Sheehan, Ryan Spelman, Adam Murphy and Leah O’Regan (cox) finished second behind the Italian crew. They competed against crews from the USA, Germany, Italy, Nederlands, and France.

In Russia meanwhile, it was our track cyclists winning medals with Kelly Murphy taking a second Gold in the Track Cycling Nations Cup in St Petersburg.

She was joined on the podium by Mia Griffin who won the bronze medal race in the Women’s Individual Pursuit.

Imagine what we will be capable of when we have an indoor velodrome out at the Sport Ireland Campus.

In athletics, there were no medals but plenty of Final appearances for our competitors at the European U23 Athletics Championships in the 1500 metres, the relays and the High Jump.
