To mark the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season, NOW brought Republic of Ireland and Manchester United legend John O’Shea, and comedian Darren Conway, together to recreate some of O’Shea’s career highlights – including THAT Figo nutmeg.
After the pair’s chance encounter during a kick-about, Darren talks John through his ‘illustrious Man United career’ before they attempt to recreate some of John’s greatest moments – including his chip against Arsenal, nutmegging Figo, and denying Robbie Keane whilst playing in goals.
“It’s not every day you get to celebrate your career highlights and bring them to life for a new audience – we had a lot of fun shooting this,” said O’Shea.
“We’re in for a great season ahead and no doubt we’ll see plenty of cracking goals and nail-biting finishes. It’s great to have a service like NOW that allows you to stream anywhere, anytime so you don’t have to miss a minute of the action.”
O’Shea recreates his Arsenal chip with ease, followed by his (possibly even more infamous) celebration. Speaking about his chip reaction, O’Shea commented that he was trying to copy Cantona but “couldn’t quite pull it off.” Eighteen years since the original moment, we see John recreate the legendary ‘nutmeg’ move he performed on Luis Figo – and has the tables turned as Darren attempts to ‘nutmeg’ John. The pair then go head-to-head in penalties to see who has superior goalkeeping skills.
“We’re delighted to be kicking off the 2021/22 Premier League season on NOW, with this great piece of content,” said Michael Forry, Director of NOW Ireland.
“John is a legend of the game and we really wanted to celebrate his greatest moments in a fun way. Darren is a fantastic talent and is a massive Manchester United fan, so it was great to see him have ‘a lot of heart’ on the pitch with John.”
