The Golfing Union of Ireland has announced a new initiative, backed by Kelloggs, aimed at discovering Ireland’s most skilled golfers.
The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Golf Skills Challenge involves a test of seven skills; driving, a shot over 135 metres, pitching, up and down, bunker play, difficult lies and putting. It is open to all golfers over the age of 18, who have an official GUI or ILGU handicap. Qualifying events will be held in Sligo, Cork, Dublin and Belfast from June to August and the final will take place at Carton Demesne in September, just ahead of this year’s Ryder Cup.
“We have had great feedback from the short game clinics we held over recent years,” said Alan Kelly, Manager of the GUI National Golf Academy. “The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Golf Skills Challenge has been developed out of those and we now have the opportunity to establish the basic skills programme in all clubs.”
“We are delighted to be getting involved in a new partnership with Irish Golf,” said Jim McNeill, Managing Director of Kellogg’s Ireland.  “As a long suffering golfer, I know from bitter experience that it is the basic skills that make the difference between a good player and a great player.”
The Challenge was launched at the GUI National Golf Academy by Ireland rugby international and Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ambassador, Rob Kearney, “As a professional athlete I fully appreciate the need to practice basic skills and drills day in, day out.”
Kearney revealed that Johnny Sexton and Brian O’Driscoll were the two strongest golfers in the Irish team and that his dream four ball would involve Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros alongside Shane Lowry who had given the team some tips while they were relaxing during an international get together earlier this year.
Online entry for the challenge is available at www.learntogolf.ie.
