It was the hottest day of the year to date and what better way to spend it that on the water as part of the 63rd International Liffey Descent.
This highlight of the Canoeing Ireland year took place on Saturday and saw paddlers in 16 different categories tackling ten weirs and 32 kilometres of flowing water on the iconic river.
The event started at the K Club in County Kildare, with Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht there to witness the first canoes departing.
The finish was at the Garda Club in Islandbridge.
The winners of the race were Clinton Cook and Joshua Simpkins of South Africa in a time pf 1:54.16.
The race transferred from a date in September to May last year and has been rewarded with better water and glorious weather.
Canoeing is a growing sport in Ireland with participation up by almost 20 per cent in the last annual report, bouncing back strongly from the disruption of the pandemic.
It’s 2024 AGM will take place at the end of this month.
