For those tracking their own strain, recovery and sleep scores on a daily basis, the latest data from WHOOP will make for interesting reading ahead of this week’s The Masters Tournament.
It suggests that Rory McIlroy is not just in form, but building towards Augusta in a more consistent and controlled way than ahead of his 2025 victory.
Released as he returns to Augusta National Golf Club, the data points to improved recovery trends, stronger sleep performance and fewer dips in readiness in the lead-in to the season’s first Major.
Rather than increasing intensity, McIlroy’s preparation has focused on stability.
Ahead of his 2025 win, his WHOOP data showed a recovery baseline of around 70 per cent, supported by a resting heart rate of 46–50 bpm and consistent sleep—strong indicators of physical readiness.
This year, the metrics have shifted further.
Sleep performance has improved from 69 per cent to 78 per cent, with an additional 35 minutes of sleep per night compared to January. Recovery has trended upwards, while March included just three “red” recovery days—highlighting fewer interruptions to training and performance.
In a tournament where margins are tight, those shifts in profile suggest a competitor peaking at exactly the right moment.
The release also comes at a time of momentum for WHOOP, which recently announced a $575 million funding round, including investment from McIlroy himself.
It reflects a growing alignment between athlete performance, personal data and commercial partnership—where the athlete is not just an ambassador, but an active participant in the product ecosystem.
Being prepared is only a part of what is needed to win on the biggest golfing stage of them all, but it certainly helps, and this is the kind of data that has never been put in the public domain before.
