Limerick has secured another major international sporting coup with the announcement that it will host the 2026 Obstacle Course Racing World Championships — a global event with Olympic ambitions and significant commercial impact.
Set to take place from August 7th to 9th, 2026, the Championships will be staged at Limerick Racecourse, with the University of Limerick serving as the official Athlete Village.
The Fédération Internationale de Sports d’Obstacles (FISO), the sport’s global governing body, confirmed the event today, describing it as one of the biggest in the sport’s history — and a key milestone on the road to its debut at the LA28 Olympic Games.
More than 4,000 athletes from over 60 countries are expected to descend on the Midwest, making this among the largest international sporting events ever hosted in the region.
Organisers estimate the economic impact at over €2.8 million.
The winning bid was developed by a coalition of local and national partners, including the Obstacle Course Racing Association of Ireland, Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau, Aimwell Events, the University of Limerick, and Limerick Racecourse.
The bid featured as part of the Sport for Business Sports Tourism Conference at the University of Limerick in April of this year.
Sergej Dikun, President of OCRA Ireland, said the event represents a landmark moment for Irish sport:
“Hosting the World Championships just two years before the sport’s Olympic debut is a huge moment for Ireland. We’re honoured to bring the global OCR community to Limerick — and to showcase the passion, people, and places that make the Mid-West Region so special.”
Adam Taylor of Aimwell Events, who co-led the bid presentation in Portugal, echoed that sentiment.
“This is not just a breakthrough for the sport in Ireland but for the Mid-West as a destination. Thousands of athletes and supporters will travel here, and they’ll leave with a world-class experience.”
OCR is among the fastest-growing sports globally, blending endurance, agility, and tactical decision-making. From rope climbs and wall scaling to high-speed sprints and team relays, the 2026 Championships will feature multiple formats, including 100m and 400m sprints, a 2–3 km technical course, a 15 km endurance challenge, and dynamic relay events.
The competition is open to professionals, age-groupers, Para-OCR athletes, and recreational competitors, underlining its reputation as an inclusive and accessible sport.
Danielle Devaney of the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau emphasised the long-term benefits.
“This is more than just three days of world-class sport. It’s an opportunity to place the Mid-West on the global map, build on our sports tourism ambitions, and deliver meaningful economic and social impact.”
The venue itself will also step into the international spotlight.
Michael Lynch, CEO of Limerick Racecourse, commented:
“Limerick Racecourse offers a unique and spectacular setting for OCR. We’re proud to play a central role in this world-class event and look forward to transforming our grounds into an arena of elite competition.”
The announcement coincides with another major event for the sport in Ireland with the inaugural European 400m OCR Championships, which take place at UL from July 18–20, bringing 300 elite athletes to Limerick.
David Ward, Sports Business Development Manager at UL, said hosting both events was a reflection of the university’s ambition.
“OCR is going to the Olympics — and we’re going with it. UL is proud to play our part, from athlete logistics to training facilities. We’re showing what this region can deliver on the world stage.”
Organisers have also issued a call for volunteers to help deliver the Championships, with roles spanning course marshalling, hydration stations, kit distribution, and media support.
UL has been at the fore of these kind of wins in recent years with major Championships won in Ultimate Frisbee, Tag Rugby, Chess and others.
It also hosted the Davis Cup Match between Ireland and Austria and this coming November will host the first Irish Padel Open.
