FIRST CONTACT WITH MONA
It is always nice to look back on first meetings with star performers and so it was that we celebrated loud and proud with Mona McSharry last night having welcomed her on stage at the Sport for Business Sporting Year Ahead way back in 2020.
She was charming and sparkling then, just as she was last night.
Sure there was hardly a dry eye in the houses of Ireland as she spoke of “still being that little girl from Grange.”
FROM IRELAND’S FITTEST FAMILY TO THE OLYMPIC PODIUM
It is unquestionably a first, and some feather in the cap for show creator Davy Fitzgerald, that Mona McSharry is the first Olympic Medallist to have also won Ireland’s Fittest Family.
Back in 2019, Mona, Dad Adrian, Mum Viola and Brother Mouric won the series under the coaching of Donncha O’Callaghan.
“I’m delighted for the McSharry’s,” he said at the time. “They are such a nice family, but they are top dog when it comes to fitness. They ripped it up, I just think they have been unbelievable, every challenge that came their way, they attacked it, that’s their nature.”
POLLUTION HALTS MEN’S TRIATHLON
Last minute tests on the water quality of the River Seine proved unacceptable and the Men’s Triathlon event has been postponed from this morning.
There is no confirmation yet of when the race will be staged.
Daniel Wiffen is expected to swim in the Open Water event in the River after his pool exploits this week.
PEATY TESTS POSITIVE
Team GB’s star swimmer Adam Peaty tested positive for Covid only hours after winning a Silver medal in the men’s 100 M breaststroke on Sunday and is now w doubt on competing in the rest of the games.
It is just being treated as any other illness that could be transmitted so he is isolating from teammates and will test again before a decision is made on his future participation.
He has won Three Olympic Golds and Three Olympic Silver medals since Rio 2016.
Sport for Business will host its inaugural Children and Sport Conference in Dublin on Thursday September 19th, with the support of Allianz Ireland and Sport Ireland. This is one of many events planned for the remainder of 2024.
