Despite the foul conditions in Dublin last night over 75% of those who had registered to compete in the Samsung night run were credited with an official time.
The streets of Dublin were closed for the night with diversions in place all across the city centre but lashing rain and a strong cold easterly wind made conditions tough for the thousands of hi vis jacket clad runners.
Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague got the event under way and the runners would their way past most of the city’s iconic sights.
It was the first such event to take place in Dublin and sponsors Samsung were able to take advantage of their official Olympic sponsor status to make it a night to remember.
It was a shame that the Olympic torch did not make it.  That had been forced on Friday to make an unscheduled stop on Irish soil at Shannon Airport when a British Airways flight from Orlando needed to refuel.  As the torch was transferred to a scheduled flight to London, airport duty manager Natasha Naughton O’Keefe became one of the first to hold it in Ireland.
