It has been rumoured for the past week and yesterday a save the date message went out for a game between Cork City FC and Celtic at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday July 8th.
It will be a pre-season game for the Scottish Champions and in between games away to Shelbourne and Waterford in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division for Cork.
This will be the first time that the team has hosted a game at the GAA HQ in the city and follows on from Bohemians packing 33,280 into the Aviva Stadium on the opening weekend of this season.
The lure of Celtic and their traditional strong supporter base in Ireland will likely top that number which will be good for the club and the venue, as well as the city.
The capacity at the ground is 45,000.
The stadium was sold out for Munster Games against South Africa and Crusaders since its redevelopment and it also hosted a testimonial game for the family of Liam Miller after his death, attracting a full house of Man United fans.
The Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team scored a famous win over France last season in the UEFA Nations League.
SPORT FOR BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
Getting more people to see a League of Ireland club in action will always be a good thing, even if most of them are there to support the Glasgow team. All it needs is a few of the younger fans to see the magic of watching live football on their doorstep.
WHAT’S UP NEXT?
The game will take place on Tuesday, July 8th.
