The globally familiar white shirt, worn by fans around the world, has been made by Adidas for 20 years but talks on a renewal stalled last year with Madrid rumoured to be seeking a four fold increase on the current $40 million a year deal.
That would beat Man United’s $110 million a year deal with Adidas and the $155 million deal that Barcelona have with Nike.
Under Armour are reported on both sides of the Atlantic to be in late stage discussion with the Spanish side.
A deal would bolster their share price which has underperformed the sportswear sector over the past year, losing 40 per cent of its value.
It would also be a shot in the arm for retailers including Lifestyle Sports and Elvery’s who thrive on the biggest deals and changes for the biggest teams.
