Davy CondonGAA CrowdsLeinster UlsterEach weekend we review the best of the Irish sporting action from around the world through the medium of numbers…
170,000 – Sporting Attraction
82,000 in Croke Park for Dublin Vs Donegal, 53,000 at the same venue the previous afternoon for the Croke Park Classic and 36,000 in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick for Kerry’s defeat of Mayo.  The numbers attending these three major sporting events around the country will have been supplemented by thousands more at smaller gatherings around the country as we proved once again that Ireland as a sporting nation knows no equal.
2016 – Horse Sport Ireland Secures Olympic Place
Ireland’s equestrian three day eventing team secured qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Sunday when finishing in sixth place at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy.  It will be one of the more expensive teams to bring to Brazil but also one of the highest value in terms of the positive impact an Olympic presence has on Ireland’s reputation as a centre of equine excellence.
3 – Medal Rush in South Carolina
Eoghan Clifford, Mark Rohan and the team of Katie Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal produced a medal rush for Ireland at the UCI Paracycling World Championships in South Carolina over the weekend.  It was Clifford’s first major Championships and he scored Gold in the time trial event.  It was Silver for the Women in the Tandem Road Race and Bronze for Rohan in his time trial event.  A magnificent haul so far from the team and well covered throughout on social media by Cycling Ireland and Paralympics Ireland.
10 – Minutes of Hell for Condon
National Hunt Jockey Davy Condon could not move for 10 minutes after a crashing fall at Cork racecourse on Sunday.  He did then begin to recover feeling and movement and was moved from the track to hospital.  He is believed to have fractured vertebrae in his spine and we wish him all the best for a full recovery.
17 – Rugby Points at Tallaght Stadium
On a weekend of stadium shifting and new ventures for venues, Ulster beat Leinster by 10 points to 7 in a final pre season warm up for the Rugby provinces at Tallaght Stadium, the home of Shamrock Rovers.  The serious business gets under way next weekend when all four Irish sides get their campaigns underway in the Guinness PRO12.
