David McGill is to step down as the CEO of Badminton Ireland at the end of October 2022.

He has worked with Badminton Ireland since 2013 and was appointed CEO in 2017, making him one of the youngest CEO’s in Irish sport. He featured in the Sport for Business / PwC 30 under 30 in that year.

During his time as CEO, he has implemented changes to ensure Badminton was compliant with the Code of Governance, overseen the upgrading of the organisation’s membership system and, most recently, led Badminton Ireland through the difficulties of the COVID pandemic.

On the court, he has delivered a performance strategy that has seen the emergence of Nhat Nguyen as a young player with global potential and the transition of players including Chloe Magee into coaching roles.

“It has been an honour to lead the organisation these past five years and serve Badminton Ireland’s members,” said McGill.

“I am proud of what the organisation has achieved in that time, and I am convinced that Badminton Ireland will continue to thrive and grow into the future.”

“It has been a great privilege to work with an exceptionally dedicated and skilled team who have been instrumental in the success the organisation has experienced. I am exceedingly grateful for all the long hours and hard work the staff of Badminton Ireland have put in to develop Badminton in Ireland and grow the NGBs standing in the Sporting community.”

“The expansion of our High-Performance unit, improvements to our tournament circuits, improvements to our governance, and increased participation opportunities have contributed to the organisation’s growth. I am particularly proud of the Mobile application and new site developed for the organisation and the strategic plan to guide the organisation into the future. These are not accomplishments a CEO makes alone; they require a committed team of gifted and passionate individuals who come together to work for a common goal and a dedicated and supportive Board.”

“I enjoyed my time with Badminton Ireland and am very grateful for the opportunity and guidance the Board gave me during that time. I will continue to work with the Badminton Ireland staff and the Chair to ensure a smooth transition.”

“David has successfully led Badminton Ireland over the past five years as CEO, following five years as a staff member, added Badminton Ireland Chair Michael Watt.

“His enthusiasm, commitment and leadership have left the organisation stronger than ever before, despite the tremendous difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“He is leaving a very positive mark on the Irish badminton scene, having spearheaded initiatives in all areas of the organisation during his time. He has been especially instrumental in developing Badminton Ireland’s new Strategic Plan to 2028. Whilst we are sad to see David go, the Board appreciate his commitment to a smooth transition and wish him many successes in his new career.”

We have always had a very positive relationship with David and we wish him well wherever the next stage of his career takes him. We hope our paths will cross again soon.

Badminton Ireland will begin a recruitment process for a new CEO shortly.
