Ireland’s Women cricketers go into today’s final game of the Evara Women’s International Tri-Series knowing that victory over Pakistan would secure one of the most eye-catching tournament wins in the recent history of Irish cricket.
Having opened the series with a defeat to the West Indies, Ireland have responded in powerful fashion, recording a first-ever T20 International win over the Caribbean side and also beating Pakistan by seven wickets at Castle Avenue last weekend.
It has left Ireland within one more win of claiming the Tri-Series trophy, a striking achievement given that the side came into the week ranked behind both opponents and without captain and leading batter Gaby Lewis.
Today’s meeting with Pakistan is effectively a series decider. Beat Pakistan for the second time in a week, and the trophy will remain in Ireland, underlining the progress being made by a young squad that continues to show it can compete with and beat more established cricket nations.
The performances have come with both character and quality. The win over Pakistan demonstrated Ireland’s ability to control a chase against a side with significant international experience, while the West Indies result showed composure under pressure in a rain-affected contest that went right to the margins.
Regardless of today’s outcome, the series has already delivered a timely lift ahead of Ireland’s departure for England on Friday and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign that lies ahead. Beating two higher-ranked sides in the space of a week will travel well with a squad that has grown in confidence through the tournament.
For Cricket Ireland, the week has also provided another reminder of the value of staging meaningful international women’s cricket at home. With games at Castle Avenue drawing attention online and giving Irish supporters a chance to see the team in competitive action, the Tri-Series has offered both preparation and profile.
Now Ireland have the opportunity to turn a strong week into a trophy-winning one.
A second win over Pakistan today would not only complete the job in the Evara Women’s International Tri-Series but also send Ireland into World Cup week with belief, momentum and another marker of progress for the women’s game.
