Gary Wilson has been appointed Head Coach of the Ireland Men’s cricket team, becoming the first Irish-born coach to take charge of the side in more than 30 years.

The former Ireland international, who won 292 caps across a 15-year playing career, succeeds Heinrich Malan at a pivotal point in the international cycle, with Ireland building towards qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Wilson moves up from his role as Assistant Coach, having joined the senior men’s coaching set-up in 2022 after earlier leading the North West Warriors. His appointment brings continuity to the Irish dressing room, but also marks a significant moment for the domestic coaching pathway.

Wilson’s elevation places one of Ireland’s most experienced former players at the head of the national men’s programme.

He becomes the first Irish-born Head Coach of the Ireland Men’s side since John Wills in the early 1990s.

“Representing Ireland as a player is something I will always be hugely proud of, but to now take on the role of Head Coach is a very special honour that means a great deal to me,” said Wilson.

“I have been extremely fortunate over the years to have worked with some of the best coaches around and have had the opportunity to learn so much.”

Wilson said his coaching beliefs are based on communication, relationships, hard work, a player-centred approach and setting high challenges for players who are driven to succeed.

He also pointed to the emotional and cultural connection within Irish cricket, adding that “the power of the connection to the Shamrock” was something he intended to use to the team’s advantage.

The ODI series against Afghanistan in August will be an important early marker in the World Cup qualification process and will give Wilson valuable time with the squad ahead of the 50-over World Cup Qualifiers in early 2027.

Graeme West, Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, said Wilson had shown strong leadership qualities both as a player and as a coach.

“I would like to congratulate Gary on his appointment — he has demonstrated strong leadership qualities both as a player and as a coach, and we look forward to working with him as we continue to develop this squad,” said West.

“Gary comes into the role at a crucial time in the World Cup Qualifier cycle and will now have valuable time to work with the squad during the build-up to the tournament, beginning with the Afghanistan series next month.”

West said Wilson’s extensive background in international and county cricket would give him “a wealth of insights and experience” as Cricket Ireland develops and delivers its high-performance strategy.

Malan Steps Back After Four Years

Wilson succeeds Heinrich Malan, who is stepping away from the Head Coach role after more than four years in charge.

Malan, 45, was appointed in 2022 and had been contracted into early 2027, but informed staff and players that he believes the timing is right to step back following Ireland’s successful T20 series against India.

He will work alongside Wilson over the coming month to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the Afghanistan series.

Malan’s time in charge delivered three consecutive T20 World Cup qualifications, Ireland’s first three Test match victories, and the continued development of a broader pool of international-standard players.

Among the landmark moments were the T20 World Cup win over England in Melbourne, Ireland’s first Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, a first home Test win against Zimbabwe in Belfast, and wins against Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa and India.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community,” said Malan.

“My family and I have had a wonderful experience living here, and we will look back on our time involved in Irish cricket with great affection.”

He added: “Thank you to the players, coaches and staff for believing in our shared vision — it has been a very special journey.”

Continuity With a New Irish Voice

Wilson paid tribute to Malan, saying the outgoing coach had played a major role in preparing him for the next step.

“I’d like to put on record my thanks to Heinrich — over the last four years, he has allowed me to have the responsibility that has put me in a position to be ready for this role, and for that I am truly grateful,” said Wilson.

“We have had some great days in that time, and I wish him and his family all the very best for what comes next.”

For Cricket Ireland, the appointment delivers both continuity and symbolism. Wilson knows the squad, the system and the standards required at the international level. He also represents a clear statement regarding the development of Irish coaching talent.

Malan leaves behind a stronger and deeper squad. Wilson now inherits the task of converting that progress into qualification for the 2027 World Cup, beginning with Afghanistan in August.
