The BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby Final takes centre stage at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night, bringing together the sporting and commercial high point of the Irish greyhound racing season.
For title sponsor BOYLE Sports, the final represents the culmination of a six-week campaign that began with the opening round in early August and has generated regular brand exposure through racing, betting markets, digital content and now a live national television broadcast.
This is a significant year in the relationship. 2026 is the 13th consecutive year in which BOYLE Sports has sponsored the Irish Greyhound Derby, making it one of the more enduring title partnerships in Irish sport. The current publicly announced agreement, signed in 2023, runs through this year’s competition, so what happens beyond Saturday will also be an interesting commercial question for Greyhound Racing Ireland.
The partnership goes far beyond placing a name above the main event. BOYLE Sports has also sponsored the Champion Stakes, traditionally used as a major Derby warm-up at Shelbourne Park, while the brand has been prominent in supporting racing during the Derby programme.
As a betting brand, it also has the advantage of creating content around the competition throughout its duration. That continues into Final week, with BoyleSports installing Bouncing Monarch as the 4/6 favourite to complete an unbeaten passage through the Derby. Wi Can James and Sleight Of Hand are next in the betting at 6/1, with Bockos Gold at 8/1.
The six finalists on Saturday represent a mix of leading trainers, owners and breeders from across the sport. The winner will collect €125,000, one of the biggest individual prizes in Irish greyhound racing.
Virgin Media Extends the Audience
The other important commercial element on Saturday is television.
Virgin Media Two will broadcast the Final live, with Ivan Yates again hosting coverage. The programme is scheduled from 9 pm to 10 pm, giving sponsor and sport a free-to-air national platform beyond the audience inside Shelbourne Park. The programme will also be available internationally through Virgin Media Play.
The Derby is one of the occasions when greyhound racing moves from specialist racing channels and digital streams into mainstream Irish television, delivering brand prominence through title and track signage, interviews, betting discussion, and the race itself.
One of the more imaginative activations around this year’s Derby has been the inaugural BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Celebrity Commentator Challenge, bringing the Dublin-Cork rivalry from Gaelic games into Shelbourne Park.
Former Dublin footballer Diarmuid Connolly and Cork dual star Eoin Cadogan were put through a commentator school under the guidance of Shelbourne Park commentator and greyhound racing journalist Ian Fortune before taking charge of races during the Derby Quarter Finals on August 29.
Connolly called Race Four and Cadogan called Race Five, creating additional personality-led content around the Derby and taking BoyleSports’ involvement beyond traditional sponsorship assets.
The activation also runs through to Final night. Behind-the-scenes footage of their training, their performances behind the microphone and, crucially, the identity of the winning commentator will form part of the live Virgin Media Two Derby Final broadcast from 9 pm to 10 pm on Saturday.
It is a good example of how sponsorship can generate its own content narrative. Connolly and Cadogan bring recognisable sporting personalities and a ready-made county rivalry; the commentary challenge delivers social and digital material during the competition; and holding back the winner gives viewers another reason to engage with the Final night television coverage.
New Shelbourne Park Part of the Proposition
Saturday also showcases Greyhound Racing Ireland’s investment in Shelbourne Park.
The stadium underwent a €5 million redevelopment in 2024, adding the Shelbourne Park Sports Bar, 1927 Lounge, South Lots Terrace, Food Hall and museum to broaden the venue beyond simply watching the racing.
The commercial benefits are evident ahead of the Final.
The restaurant is already fully booked with a waiting list, while general admission is €25 and a €30 group package combines admission, food, a drink and post-racing entertainment. Pre-race entertainment begins at 5.30 pm, and a live DJ will play after racing.
Heineken and Orchard Thieves are among the drinks included in that package, another example of how the modernised venue lets GRI increase the value of a major racing night through food, beverage, hospitality and entertainment rather than ticket sales alone.
That is an important part of the wider commercial picture. Greyhound Racing Ireland recorded 351,637 attendances nationally in 2025, while more than 22,000 people attended its four biggest classic-event programmes. Corporate and restaurant hospitality across its venues reached 82 per cent capacity during the key November and December period.
The Derby is effectively the flagship shop window for that proposition.
A Growing Sponsorship Portfolio
The Derby also sits at the head of a sponsorship portfolio which Greyhound Racing Ireland has continued to strengthen over the past year, with partnerships stretching across racing, welfare, community engagement and major events.
Those relationships vary significantly in their objectives.
The Con & Annie Kirby Memorial at Limerick Greyhound Stadium, sponsored by JP and Noreen McManus, has developed a distinctive community dimension through its partnership with Limerick GAA, linking participating greyhounds with local clubs and connecting the competition directly into the county’s sporting community.
At the other end of the commercial spectrum, the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby is built around one of the highest-profile betting and sporting partnerships in Irish racing.
The common thread is the ability of those partnerships to enhance the sport’s profile, broaden audience reach, and create additional opportunities for commercial and stakeholder engagement.
Flagship sponsorships around Greyhound Racing Ireland’s Classic events, alongside the ability to attract new partners, also measure commercial confidence in greyhound racing as a platform for both brand exposure and community impact.
Central to that approach is the relationship between Greyhound Racing Ireland, individual stadium teams and each sponsor, developing partnerships around objectives which can extend beyond straightforward branding or naming rights.
A full Shelbourne Park, a €125,000 first prize, a live hour on Virgin Media Two and an odds-on favourite attempting to complete an unbeaten Derby campaign provide a strong commercial as well as sporting finale to one of the longest-running title sponsorships on the Irish sporting calendar.
