Roscommon Football

15,000 fans on a Sunny afternoon and a Roscommon comeback from three points down at Half Time to win by ten. This was a very impressive performance from the underdogs, highlighted by scoring a total of 1-11 off turning over the Mayo kick outs.

 

Down Football

Down caused a second major upset of the weekend inflicting a rare defeat in Ulster on a Jim McGuinness led Donegal in their home ground in Letterkenny. Two late goals were enough to seal a six point victory for Down who continued a rich vein of form from their six wins from seven in the Allianz League through the spring.

 

Peter Lynch

The London Marathon headline may have been about the first official sub two minute time, but Irish eyes were on Peter Lynch who regained the Irish Marathon Record with a run of 2:06:08 in finishing ninth.

 

Kildare and Waterford Ladies Football

The provincial Championships in Ladies Football got underway at the weekend with wins for Kildare over Meath and Waterford over Kerry to throw the Leinster and Munster competitions wide open.

 

Anna Abom

19 year old Anna Abom was crowned the South of Ireland Women’s Amateur Champion at Lahinch on Sunday, winning by ten strokes from runner up Kate Lanigan. The win was especially emotional coming only months after the death of her Father.

 

Irish Sailing

Ireland made a powerful statement in France over the weekend, as Eve McMahon claimed Silver in the women’s dinghy and Olympians Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove secured Silver in the men’s skiff at French Olympic Week, the second Sailing Grand Slam of the season.

 

UL Bohemians

It took an 83rd minute try for UL Bohemians to make it three in a row in the Energia All Ireland League Women’s Final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, just getting over the line to deprive Blackrock College of a first title.

 

St Mary’s RFC

The Dublin team won a forst Energia All Ireland title since 2000, defeating Clontarf with a six try victory at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.
