Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Ladies Gaelic Football, Athletics, Tennis and the peculiarly Irish Poc Fada.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Allianz, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our annual Sport for Social Good and Children and Sport Events.

Dublin Ladies Football

A dominant performance from the start saw Dublin land their seventh TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Championship at Croke Park on Sunday against Meath. This was the first title for the new management team of Paul Casey, and also for sponsors Staycity Aparthotels in their second year as sponsors of Dublin Gaelic Games, and also, from a very personal point of view, for Rachel Hartnett, of this parish…

Louth and Tyrone Ladies Football

Louth and Tyrone won the Junior and Intermediate TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Championships on a festival day for the sport at Croke Park, drawing an overall attendance of over 48,000, not half bad for an August Bank Holiday Weekend.

Sarah Lavin

Her performance at the 123.ie National Championships at DCU Morton Stadium in Santry meant a tenth national title for the Limerick sprint hurdler.

Michael Agwi

Ireland’s Number One Tennis player almost went the whole way at the Irish Tennis Open at Carrickmines on Sunday, making it to the Final of the men’s singles and winning the first set, but eventually finishing in the runners-up position.

Colin Ryan

Colin Ryan of Limerick won his second annual M Donnelly Poc Fada Competition in the Cooley Mountains. He was on the Limerick Senior Hurling Panel when they won the All Ireland Hurling Championship in 2018.
