Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Rugby, Cycling, Football, and Athletics.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by AIG, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our publication of the annual 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport.

The Irish Women’s Rugby Team

Qualification has been secured for the Quarter Finals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup after a victory over Spain in Northampton on Sunday.  The 42 points scored were a good sign, while the 27 points conceded were a little concerning, but the win was the most important thing. Now, all eyes are on New Zealand in Brighton next Sunday.

Katie George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly

Katie-George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly have successfully defended both their Time Trial and Road Race world titles at the UCI Para-cycling World Championships in Ronse, Belgium. The pair, who retained their Time Trial crown on Friday, returned to the roads on Sunday morning for the Women’s B Road Race. Despite facing a series of mechanical setbacks and challenging conditions, they powered through to claim victory, finishing 20 seconds clear of Poland’s Justyna Kuter and Aleksandra Kolkowicz.

Israel Olatunde

Israel Olatunde stormed to a new Irish national 100m record on Saturday afternoon at the Be Fast Today Track Academy meeting in Lee Valley, London. The 23-year-old from Dundalk clocked a time of 10.08 to better his previous record of 10.12, which he also set in London twelve months ago.  He is the first Irishman to break the 10.1-second barrier for the event.

Athlone Women’s Football Team

Two goals from Kelly Brady and Roisin Molloy were enough to beat Crvena Zvezda in the Netherlands on Saturday, securing a place for Athlone Town in the first qualifying round of the Women’s Europa League, in which they will face Glasgow City over two legs next week and the week after.

Wexford Women’s Football Team

Wexford came from behind against Bohemians before winning the All Island Cup Final on penalties at Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday afternoon.
