Our new series – Champions of the Weekend returns after the Christmas break where we will select three performances from Irish sport that are worthy of the title.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by AIB, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of Gaelic Games.
Watergrasshill Hurling Club
The Intermediate and Junior AIB All Ireland Club Championship Finals took centre stage at Croke Park over the weekend and delivered in fine style in terms of drama.
60 minutes of action had been followed by five of injury time when a long ball forward deflected into the path of Sean Desmond who buried the ball in the net to secure the title for Cork side Watergrasshill.
The faces of the children in the picture above show just what it means to land a national title with your friends.
Efrem Gidey
Clonliffe Harriers Efrem Gidey produced a huge performance on the roads in Valencia on Sunday, clocking 27:43 for 10k, which if ratified, breaks John Treacy’s 1985 national record (27.46).
In the 10km Valencia Ibercaja race on Sunday morning, Gidey hit a steady 13:52 five kilometre split before finishing the full distance in 27:43. Not only was this a significant chunk off his previous best of 27:57, but it shaved around three seconds off Treacy’s 27:46 mark set in 1985.
Women’s Rugby
The Irish Wolfhounds and Clover teams both scored wide margin wins in the Celtic Rugby Competition bridging the gap between provincial and international sport in a big year for the game.
Stacey Flood was player of the match for the Wolfhounds against Brython Thunder while the Clovers racked up another 40 points in their win against Edinburgh in Cork.
