Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we highlight action in Sailing, Hurling, Gaelic Football, Gymnastics, Motorsport and Athletics..

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by SSE Airtricity, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our annual listing of 30 Under 30 Young Leaders in and around the business of sport.

Eve McMahon

In a historic first for Irish sailing, Howth sailor Eve McMahon  won the Bronze medal at the ILCA World Championships on Saturday during an epic final day in Qingdao, China.  It is the first time an Irish female sailor has medalled at Senior World Championships and a huge achievement for the 22-year-old who already has two back-to-back Under 21 World Championships to her name.

Limerick Hurling

All the talk this season has been of Cork but Limerick laid down a strong marker on Sunday afternoon that even if they lost to the Rebel County in last year’s All Ireland semi-final, this team is not gone yet.  Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane were at their best and Cork had no answer with the game done and dusted by half-time.  The win also meant Clare’s exit from the reckoning in defending their title from last year.

Cavan Football

Gaelic Football has served up some enthralling games so far this season and while Dublin’s win in Galway was as dramatic as they come it was the defeat of the other Connacht finalist that was perhaps even more telling.  Cavan were worth every bit of their victory with the three point margin only made look more reasonable by a last kick Mayo goal.

Gymnastics

1,300 gymnasts and 3,146 spectators were in attendance at the National Gymnastics Series Championships at the Sport Ireland Campus over the weekend.  A masterclass in performance and logistics from the team behind this special occasion.

Alex Dunne

The Offaly Motor racing Driver stands on top of the F2 Leaderboard after securing a second win of the season at Imola over the weekend.  He will race next week in the Monaco F2 race.  Charles LeClerc and George Russell have won this Championshup in recent years before going on to secure major deals in F1.

Alex Denning

Meanwhile on the other side of the world Dubliner Alex Denning was in the spotlight winning for a third time in four races in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Championship for SJM Theodore racing in Shanghai

James Gormley and Hannah Gilliland

The National 5K Championships took place over the weekend with James Gormley of Carmen Runners winning the men’s event in a time of 13:59, and Hannah Gilliland of Annadale Striders taking the Women’s in 16:17.
