Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.

This weekend, we highlight action in European Rugby, World Athletics, the GAA and LGFA Championships, and Horse Racing.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by KPMG, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Golf.

Leinster Rugby

It was not the easiest of paths, but Leinster’s battling win over Toulon at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday sets up a return to the European Champions Cup Final, facing Bordeaux in Bilbao at the end of the month.

Ulster Rugby

20 years without a trophy is a long time, but Ulster Rugby put themselves in a position to end that with victory in the Challenge Cup Semi Final against Exeter Chiefs on Friday night.  They will now face Montpellier in the Challenge Cup Final in Bilbao on Friday, May 22nd.

Irish 4×400 metre relay

The Irish Women’s 4x400m relay team turned in a hugely impressive performance to qualify for the 2027 World Athletics Championships on the second day of competition at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana. The quartet of Rachel McCann, Sophie Becker, Arlene Crossan and Sharlene Mawdsley combined to win their qualification heat in 3:23.83, their fastest time since 2024. Victory sealed the team’s spot in Beijing, where the World Athletics Championships will take place in September 2027.

Dublin Football

Double relegation for the Dublin Men’s and Women’s Football teams was a blow, but they both bounced back in Leinster over the weekend with strong wins over Louth in the men’s and Kildare in the Women’s.

Aidan O’Brien

True Love claimed an impressive victory in the 1,000 Guineas to hand Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien an eighth winner in the fillies’ Classic at Newmarket.

Monaghan Football

Monaghan had a tough Allianz League campaign, but all that was forgotten in a thriller of an Ulster semi-final win after extra time over Derry on Saturday evening
