#ThisGirlGolfs is a new campaign launched by England Golf to dismantle the stereotype of the sport being a ‘game for gentlemen and for chums to get together and talk business’.

The aim is to encourage more young girls to take up the sport and expand the base of membership in clubs.

Over the past decade Ireland has enjoyed a golden age in the men’s game with four individual Irish players winning major tournaments and Rory McIlroy ascending to be the World’s best.

That has filtered through to youth with Paul Dunne capturing headlines around the world at St Andrews earlier this month.

It has also worked with regard to producing players of real quality on the Women’s side as well. Stephanie Meadows has been placed in the US Open which twin sisters Lisa and Leona Maguire have been tearing up the amateur ranks while continuing their studies at Duke University in the US.

The campaign has been launched ahead of this weekend’s Ricoh British Open at Turnberry in Scotland.  The event will be televised on all four days on the BBC.

Aside from the players there will be added Irish interest this year as preparations continue for the Curtis Cup, the top event in Women’s amateur golf which will be held next year at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club south of Dublin.
