The GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association were part of Dublin Pride over the weekend, joining Saturday’s parade as part of Gaelic games’ continuing commitment to equality, inclusion and visibility for LGBTQIA+ members.
The joint Gaelic games presence followed a Pride Breakfast at The Croke Park Hotel, bringing members, players, volunteers, staff and allies together before the parade. The group then assembled on Jones Road before joining the march through Dublin city centre.
This year’s Dublin Pride Festival ran from June 24 to 28 under the theme One Story – Many Voices, with Saturday’s parade forming the centrepiece of a weekend of community, celebration and visibility.
For Gaelic games, the involvement carried significance beyond a single day. The shared presence of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association sent a strong message that clubs, counties and national bodies have a role to play in ensuring that every player, coach, volunteer, official and supporter feels welcome.
The weekend also came against the backdrop of growing work across Irish sport to make participation safer and more inclusive for LGBTQIA+ people. In that context, the visibility of Gaelic games at Pride matters. It shows support not only from the centre, but also for the club members around the country who may still be looking for signs that their sport is a place where they can fully belong.
Sport has a powerful capacity to shape culture, and Gaelic games, with their reach into every parish and community, are especially well placed to do so. A visible presence at Pride is one part of that broader work, but it is an important one.
