The highlight of our monthly look at Ireland’s sporting social numbers with Sportego is the breaching of 100,000 followers by a GAA County team for the first time. Dublin hit the magic number and are likely to climb higher still if they can finish their semi-final job against Mayo next Saturday and advance to an All Ireland meeting with Kerry.
Cricket Ireland added nearly 5% to its social reach in August, mainly down to the One Day International against Australia, while Irish Rugby continued to lead the way among the governing bodies of the major sports. A slower than normal growth of 1.67% is likely just the calm before the storm of the Rugby World Cup.
The Republic of Ireland soccer team is back in action this week with Qualifier matches against Gibraltar and Georgia and the build up to the deciding games in the group against Poland and Germany will drive up commentary and engagement there.
Dundalk’s dominance on the pitch in the SSE Airtricity League is matched by continued good growth in social media as well, up 3.26% during August. Limerick FC hit their own target of going through 20,000 followers with a growyth in the month, fuelled by new signings, of 5.5%, the best in the League.
Mayo’s continuing bid to end five decades of heartache has edged them closer to Cork behind Dublin in the GAA table. If it is they who progress to the third Sunday in September then the engagement with fans home and abroad could be enough to bridge the less than 2,500 gap between the counties in second and third.
