With close to 11,000 posts and over 4 million engagements, Olytico’s Sport for Business analysis for September 2024 showcases the best of social media from Irish Sport.

After examining the numbers for X and Facebook over the past two days, we turn our attention to Instagram today.

Tomorrow, we will highlight the best of the month on TikTok.

In the infographics below, we have ranked each of the organisations across a range of metrics on each network, including the most active, the most engaged with, and the most engaging content as well as engagements per 1,000 followers where possible.

It is important to note that this analysis is based on publicly available data. It does not include any analysis or insight on paid or promoted content. When % figures are used (unless otherwise stated), they refer to the previous month’s figures.

We are also looking to engage with each social media manager responsible for the accounts to plan for the next stage in developing this ever-popular monthly look at what is happening. Thank you to those who have already been in touch. We are looking to schedule an online meeting to discuss this in the next short while.

September 2024 Highlights on Instagram

Instagram activity was another faller on last month’s high, falling 13% to 2,536 posts with a 30% drop in engagements to 2,778,565.

Looking across the monthly analysis as a whole, Instagram’s share of engagements rose 7% to just over 76%, reinforcing the importance of the channel for sporting organisations.

The Instagram activity charts were again topped by the League of Ireland (521 posts, -11%) as EA Sports FC 25 was launched.

Paralympics Ireland (140) were in second as Orla Comerford content generated their top six posts.

In third, the LOI Women’s Premier Division (127, +44%) featured this stunning free-kick from Athlone’s Madie Gibson.

The GAA (12, +71%) bought us the nominees for the 2024 PWC GAA|GPA FOTY and HOTY, and Vision Sports Ireland (31,+55%) celebrated their athletes who took home medals from Paris.

Dublin GAA (12,384, +575%) topped the average engagement per post chart, as they reminisced over All-Ireland Football glory in 2019. Ireland Football (5,230, -3%) in second bought us a very special rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann, and the GAA were in third (3,566, -58%).

Ulster (+153%), Leinster (+81%), Munster (+63%), and Connacht (+49%) all saw noticeable increases in their engagements through two rounds of URC action.

Paralympics Ireland claimed the hat-trick for ‘highest engagements per 1,000 followers’ with 6,890.

For the second month in a row, the Northern Ireland account brought us the most engaged with content on Instagram, this time with this image of Jamal Lewis from the warm-up ahead of the Luxembourg game, the collaboration with Sao Paulo FC (6.8 million Instagram followers) for whom Lewis plays, generated over 91,000 public engagements and is an excellent example of how sports organisations can collaborate on posts to boost reach and engagement.
