An attendance of around 70,000 is expected at Croke Park on Sunday for the All Ireland Semi Final between Dublin and Mayo.  This will be a bigger crowd than at any English Premier League but still leaves around 12,000 places that could be filled.
The previous afternoon the Aviva Stadium will be packed to its 50,000 capacity for the opening game of the US College Football season between Notre Dame and Navy.
An estimated 35,000 fans, mainly of Notre Dame with its strong Irish connections, have travelled to Dublin and walking through the streets of the City yesterday it was impossible to avoid the large numbers that were only too happy to soak up Irish culture and events.
An All Ireland Championship game at the home of the GAA would be a ticket that many would be very happy to fly home with and given the flexible ticketing arrangements now in place with the GAA through Tickets.ie, it might be possible to arrange a marketing exercise to attract people from Dublin 4 to Dublin 3 24 hours later.
There will of course be a large number of GAA fans there to see the ‘Fightin’ Irish’.  It would be good for the coffers and the international reputational reach of the Association if there were a few thousand more going in the reverse direction on Sunday.  If only one in ten of the 35,000 travelling fans could be persuaded it would mean additional revenue in the short term of €140,000.
