Sligo Rovers are on the verge of securing the Airtricity Premier league title but are leaving nothing to chance about making sure there is strong support for the remaining five home fixtures.
They draw potential support from a wide geographic area and are looking to tap into Mayo’s big weekend in the All Ireland Football semi final by offering a €5 discount to Monday’s game against Bohemians for anyone who brings a ticket from Croke Park on Sunday to the turnstiles at the Showgrounds.
The club also has promotions running in Leitrim and is offering double game discounts to registered junior soccer players and family tickets available exclusively through shopping centres in Sligo over the weekend.
It is a well co-ordinated and imaginative approach to making sure that fans feel appreciated and should, on the back of rising excitement about the title challenge, ensure a strong financial as well as playing finish to the season.
Tapping into ‘key moments’ is an idea we put forward in the wake of the European Championships as being very important for Airtricity League Clubs.  Playing in the summer months gives an opportunity to attract fans that would otherwise only have eyes for the Premier League and there are many communities who have a love for the game but can be convinced to at least sample the League.
Damien Duff, in a wide ranging interview on Newstalk last night gave a potential longer term boost when revealing he would love to return to Ireland in a few years time and play a season or two in the League.  He admitted no allegiance to any particular club which should have feelers being extended by all to ensure he lines out in the right colours.
As a kid he played for Leicester Celtic in Rathfarnham and Lourdes Celtic in Crumlin so perhaps St Pats would be his closest Airtricity League Club.
