Dublin’s dramatic win over Mayo in Sunday’s All Ireland Senior Football final leaped to the top of the table as Ireland’s most-watched television show of 2017.
1.3 million viewers were watching as Dean Rock lined up the winning free deep into added time and there was an average of 1,137,500 tuned in across the whole of the game.
It was also a massive winner in digital terms with a record number of 107,451 live streams on the RTÉ Player, a little over two percent of which were tuned to the Irish language commentary.
These numbers put the previous best for the year in the shade. Only two weeks ago Galway’s nail-biting win over a spirited Waterford drew an average audience of 901,500 to RTÉ2’s live coverage of the All Ireland Hurling Final representing 73% of all those watching TV at the time.

The TV audience for the Hurling Final peaked at over 1.1 million people at the very end of the game as the Tribesmen hung on to claim a famous victory and bring the Liam McCarthy cup back to Galway for the first time since 1988.
In terms of live streams the figure two weeks ago was a little over 60,000 so had risen by over 40 percent with the move to the bigger ball.
It was a huge undertaking to broadcast the game live. Sport for Business member TVM was at the heart of it with three Outside Broadcast units and 93 staff on site behind the scenes delivering the pictures that were broadcast out on TG4 for the Minor Final, RTÉ and Sky for the senior game and across different channels including in the stadium as part of the GAA’s clip rights packages.
In total, they used 25 different camera positions to bring together all the action for the viewing public as well as those in the ground.
RTÉ Sport, the GAA, TG4, TVM, Dublin GAA, AIB and eir are among the more than 220 organisations that play an active part of the Sport for Business community.
