26 different clubs from across 12 different sports wake up this morning with an additional €5,000 to invest as a result of being named as County winners in the second annual Texaco Support for Sport Initiative.

The scheme is hosted and organised by Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited, the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand. All clubs were able to nominate themselves and a winner was chosen from each county.

Of the clubs to receive funding this year eight are from Gaelic Games, three from football, two from basketball, tennis, athletics, rowing and cricket, and one each from badminton, boxing, golf, hockey and rugby.

The list of winning clubs can be seen below with a few unexpected ones including a rowing club in landlocked Offaly, a cricket club in the rugby and hurling heartland of Limerick, and Kerry’s winner combining Golf and Fishing.

“As an adjudicator, the most encouraging aspect of the Texaco Support for Sport initiative is to see the wide mix of clubs making application under the scheme, from the larger mainstream sports to the smaller clubs that often represent minority interest sports,” said Brand Ambassador Donncha O’Callaghan.

“It is a valuable way of providing a route to funding for clubs working to improve facilities, expand memberships and enhance their role in communities.”

“The wide spread of winners highlights the diverse range of sports now being enjoyed by Irish people, children and adults, and the degree to which sport is prospering in communities across the country.”

“The purpose for which the initiative was introduced, to ease the financial pressure on members by providing new and additional funding so often required to help clubs achieve their objectives and play a pivotal and positive role in the community that surrounds them, is a special one, added James Twohig, Director of Ireland Operations at Valero Energy.”
