Roberto Lopes is set to make history this summer as the first player whose professional career has been spent entirely in the League of Ireland to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

We may yet have Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland teams joining him but his place is the only one secured already.

The Shamrock Rovers captain, who represents Cape Verde at international level, has also been named a World Cup ambassador by Nike and Intersport Elverys in his first commercial partnerships of the tournament year, and there may be more, with his off field activities being handled by former FAI Communications Director Cathal Dervan.

Lopes, widely known as “Pico”, will lead Cape Verde into the group stage of the World Cup this summer, where they are scheduled to face Spain in Atlanta on June 15, Uruguay in Miami on June 21 and Saudi Arabia in Houston on June 26.

The 33-year-old defender, born and raised in Crumlin in Dublin, has become one of the most recognisable figures in Irish football. His father Carlos is from Cape Verde, while his mother Judith is from Dublin, and he first came to the attention of the Cape Verde national team through a message on LinkedIn in 2018. He ignored that because it had come initially in Portuguese but when the manager sent it again in English, the window of opportunity to play in the World Cup became real.

Since then, Lopes has established himself as captain of Shamrock Rovers during a period of significant success for the club. In 2025 he led the Hoops to their first League of Ireland Premier Division and FAI Cup double in 38 years.

He was also recognised for his impact on and off the field by being named Soccer Writers Ireland Personality of the Year.

Lopes’ career pathway has been rooted entirely in the Irish game, beginning with schoolboy clubs Lourdes Celtic, Home Farm and Belvedere FC before spells with Bohemian FC and his current club Shamrock Rovers.

The World Cup qualification caps a remarkable period in his personal and professional life. Between October and December 2025, Lopes became a father for the first time with the arrival of his son Diego, helped Cape Verde qualify for the World Cup finals and captained Shamrock Rovers to their historic domestic double.

Shamrock Rovers head coach Stephen Bradley described Lopes’ achievement as special.

“What Pico has achieved with the World Cup is special, it really is,” he said.

The story has also attracted wider media attention. Patrick Kielty highlighted Lopes’ extraordinary year during an appearance on The Late Late Show, noting that “Pico’s year has been quite amazing, on and off the field.”

The global audience for the 2026 tournament is expected to reach as many as five billion viewers, underlining the scale of the platform on which Lopes will represent both Cape Verde and Irish domestic football.
