Strong progress has been reported on the development of the new all-weather track at Tipperary Racecourse, with construction remaining on schedule to be completed by the end of September 2027.
Key stakeholders from across racing, government, local business, tourism and community organisations gathered at the racecourse this week for a progress update on the project, which is expected to play a major role in strengthening Ireland’s racing infrastructure and supporting year-round activity in the sport.
The new facility is being developed as Ireland’s second all-weather racecourse and is viewed as an important strategic addition to the national racing calendar. It is expected to provide greater flexibility for winter racing, support training and racing opportunities in the south of the country, and deliver wider economic benefits for Tipperary town and the surrounding region.
Those attending the update were briefed on construction milestones achieved to date, the next phases of development, key infrastructure works and sustainability measures incorporated into the design.
Andrew Hogan, Racecourse Manager at Tipperary, and Maurice Moloney, Chair of Tipperary Racecourse Committee, welcomed representatives from the racing sector, elected office, government agencies, local enterprise groups, tourism bodies and community organisations to the site.
The project has attracted strong national and local support, reflecting its potential to create employment, stimulate visitor activity, support hospitality and related services, and further strengthen Tipperary’s reputation as a centre of equine excellence.
“The development of the new all-weather track represents a major investment in the future of Irish racing and in the economic vitality of Tipperary,” said Andrew Hogan, Tipperary Racecourse Manager.
“The progress update this week demonstrates the strong momentum behind the project and the collaborative effort in Tipperary town and the region that continues to drive it forward.
“Ongoing engagement between Tipperary Racecourse, the project team and everyone who attended the progress update throughout the entire construction process is very important for us. We look forward to hosting further progress updates as the project develops and advances towards completion.”
Suzanne Eade, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, said the development formed part of HRI’s wider strategic planning for the sport and would help broaden the capacity of the racing programme.
“The new all-weather track is a key strategic objective for Horse Racing Ireland, providing accessible racing and training facilities for Tipperary and the south of the country,” she said.
“In addition, the opportunities it will create for tourism, hospitality and related services are significant and will have a lasting positive impact on the local economy.
“It was very encouraging to see the momentum and positive engagement at the progress update. This transformative facility is moving forward with great purpose, and the enthusiasm from everyone involved reinforces how vital this second all-weather track will be for the future, sustainability, and year-round growth of Irish racing.”
Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2027, with the ambition of staging a full winter race programme during the 2027/28 season.
Atlantic Golf Construction, AGC Ventures Limited, based in Ballybunion, County Kerry, is the main contractor on the project.
Martin Collins Enterprises Ltd is installing the Polytrack racing surface, while floodlighting at the venue will be provided by McSherry Electrical Limited, based in Mallow, County Cork.
