Hurling for Cancer Research will return to live television this evening with TG4 broadcasting the annual charity fixture from Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow – supported by a significant in-kind contribution from production company Fogarty Fenwick and almost 40 members of the broadcast crew.

TG4 will begin its coverage at 19:15 on Monday, August 24, ahead of a 19:30 throw-in for one of the most distinctive fixtures in the Irish sporting calendar.

The annual game, proudly supported by Centra, brings together leading names from hurling, camogie and across Irish sport to raise funds for cancer research through the Irish Cancer Society.

This year’s broadcast will once again be made possible by a remarkable voluntary effort behind the cameras.

Every member of the television production crew covering the event will give their time without charge, with almost 40 people having volunteered for the production.

Production company Fogarty Fenwick: Television Production is also providing its services free of charge.

It will be the eighth consecutive year in which the company has produced Hurling for Cancer Research for television without charging for its work.

Fogarty Fenwick works extensively with TG4 across its sporting output, producing programmes including Sacar Beo and Cispheil Bheo, as well as a range of other productions.

The contribution is substantial when the technical, staffing, and logistical demands of producing a live outside broadcast are taken into account.

It also reflects the wider volunteer spirit that has grown around Hurling for Cancer Research since the concept was established by horseracing figures Jim Bolger and Davy Russell.

Almost €1.9 million has been raised for cancer research through the event to date, bringing together players, organisers, commercial partners, volunteers and supporters.

There will be no shortage of talent on show in Carlow.

Among those lined up to take part are Patrick Horgan, Noel McGrath, Lee Chin, Joe Canning, Austin Gleeson, Darragh O’Donovan, Walter Walsh, Tommy Walsh and Jackie Tyrrell.

Camogie will be represented by stars including Grace Walsh and Ashling Thompson, while the fixture’s crossover appeal will again be demonstrated by appearances from Dublin footballer Con O’Callaghan and former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Hunt.

County and sporting rivalries will be temporarily put to one side as Jim Bolger’s Stars take on Davy Russell’s Best.

The competitive element has always been part of the appeal, but fundraising and entertainment remain at the heart of an evening that has become an established late-summer sporting occasion.

TG4’s television coverage will bring the action and atmosphere from Netwatch Cullen Park to a nationwide free-to-air audience, while Spórt TG4’s social channels will provide clips, highlights and updates throughout the evening.

Sport for Business Perspective

A live television production requires skilled people across cameras, sound, production, graphics, engineering and numerous other roles. Having close to 40 professionals donate that expertise, alongside a production company absorbing its own costs for an eighth consecutive year, represents a significant contribution to the event.

Alongside Centra’s commercial backing, TG4’s broadcast platform, the players giving their time and the supporters buying tickets and donating, it demonstrates the collaborative model that has enabled Hurling for Cancer Research to approach the €2 million fundraising milestone.

Hurling for Cancer Research 2026 takes place at Netwatch Cullen Park, Carlow on Monday, August 24. TG4 coverage begins at 19:15 with throw-in at 19:30. Tickets and donations are available through Hurling for Cancer Research, with all proceeds supporting cancer research through the Irish Cancer Society.
