Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we highlight action in Hurling, Athletics, Gaelic Football, Deaf Futsal, Badminton and Para Swimming.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by AIG, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and supporter of our annual listing of 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport.
Dublin Hurlers
Bookmakers had Limerick at odds of 1/25 to win Saturday’s All-Ireland Championship preliminary Hurling Quarter-Final. When Dublin lost their Captain, Chris Crummy, to a red card after 15 minutes, even that might have seemed generous. But nobody told Dublin, and they produced what will go down as one of the greatest, and thoroughly deserved, upsets of the GAA Championships in living memory.
Leona Maguire
It promised even more going into the final round. However, Leona Maguire still posted a Top 20 Finish in a Major at the KPMG PGA Championship in Texas last night, sitting alongside World Number 1 Nelly Korda on the leaderboard.
Kildare and Limerick Footballers
The Tailteann Cup has grown steadily in stature and importance, and on Sunday, both semi-finals were broadcast live on RTÉ2 from Croke Park, with Kildare and Limerick winning to set up a final that will also be televised live.
Men’s 4 x 100 Metre Relay Team
Michael Farrelly, Bori Akinola, Marcus Lawler and Israel Olatunde broke a 25-year National Record with a time of 38.92 seconds at the World Continental Tour Meet in Switzerland on Saturday.
Ireland Women’s Deaf Futsal
Team Ireland qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s World Deaf Futsal Championships beating England 6-3 in the Quarter-Finals. The Semi-Final will be played in Montesilvano, Italy on Tuesday 24th June.
Sophia Noble
Sophia Noble won silver at the Czech International in Badminton over the weekend.
Para Swimmers
Roisín Ní Ríain and Luke O’Donoghue both won medas at the IDM berlin Open Swimming Championships over the weekend.
