European Week of Sport draws to a close this weekend with activities taking place up and down the country offering people an opportunity to engage with a new sport or reconnect with physical activity.

One of the biggest coming together of diverse events was the programme put together by Dublin City Council for Sportsfest.

Dublin City Sport and Wellbeing Partnership created this seven years ago and it has gone from strength to strength.

Over the years it has developed its event calendar to align with national and international events thereby maximising promotion of Dublin City Council’s sport and leisure services, adding momentum to local sports programmes and initiatives and ultimately increasing reach across communities in Dublin city.

The overarching goal of the partnership is to provide opportunities for everyone to partake in sport and physical activity regardless of age, gender, background or ability and Sportsfest is designed to reinforce that core message.

In 2023 over 60 Sportsfest events were delivered across the city and highlights included the launch of the ground-breaking Sim for STEM Women’s Motorsport programme and the setting of a Guinness World record at the Freestyle Soccer event in Ballymun.

Testimonials from the events demonstrated just how significant sport is in enriching the lives of our citizens and building healthy and happy communities.

2024 is another bumper year with something to inspire everyone over the week.

The Griffith Mile Fun Run was the perfect launch for Sportsfest on Sunday 22nd September with inclusion groups participating and the it will conclude with the second Older Adult Sports Days on Monday 30th September in Dublin City Council’s Cabra Parkside Centre.

The best kind of festival is one that helps us discover our adventurous side, try something new and in between the activities make new friends and connections.

That spirit is at the heart of Dublin City Sportsfest so from adult pickleball to kid’s yoga, men’s swimming to dance fitness, so much is on offer. Getting to do Yoga in City Hall as pictured above is always one of the most popular events.

The Local Sports Partnerships also have a huge role to play in education and learning and this year dedicated Inclusion and Integration Officers have been offering online awareness training to support those who work in the area of sport inclusion.

Local clubs have been hosting open events and taster sessions all under the Sportsfest banner with prizes on offer for best event and social media presence.

Today there is an iCoach Kids workshop in Cloghran and a Chrysalis Recovery Football Tournament at Grangegorman, a walking football mini blitz at Sherrif Street Youth Club and a Primary School Rugby Blitz at the Alfie Byrne Pitches in Clontarf.

A brilliant gathering of a rich mix of different opportunities, specifically designed for appeal to every age group and every level of previous physical activity.
