“Sport has the power to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela. “It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.”

The words are more than 25 years old but the sentiment is as true today as when they were said by the South African President and advocate for humanity.

Today we are pleased to be part of the launch of a new competition designed to highlight this very role of sport as a force for good and a counter to the discrimination and racism that is still a stain on parts of our society.

With funding and support from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the UNESCO Chair at Munster Technological University and key sports stakeholders in Ireland including the Federation of Irish Sport, Sport Ireland, the GAA, Sport Against Racism Ireland, Sport for Business and the Central Statistics Office we can celebrate the launch of TRUST Ireland.

It is a movement designed to socialise sport, human rights and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals among government agents, the sports sector, higher education and training, and rights holders on the island of Ireland.

As part of Munster Technological University’s Innovation and Enterprise Month, TRUST Ireland are launching a photo and caption competition.

Entrants are invited to submit a photo or video on what “human rights in and through sport” means to them, along with a short (240 character) caption explaining their choice.

Entries can be original images or videos. or in the month of lockdown as it stands, through curated photos or videos.

The competition is open to people of all ages both across Ireland and internationally. In particular, input from rightsholder groups including people with disabilities; women and girls; Travellers and ethnic minorities; the LGBTQI+ community; asylum seekers, refugees and migrants; and disadvantaged or marginalised communities are sought.

Prizes in the form of vouchers will be offered in the following categories:
• Best overall entry
• Best picture / video
• Best caption
• Youth award
• Popular vote award
• Best MTU entry

This really is not about winning though but the taking part.

Sport for Business will share a selection of videos and images over the coming weeks to reflect the themes of the competition and hopefully awaken greater awareness in all of us of the power that lies in the work we do and enable across sport.
