Lidl Ireland is demonstrating its continued commitment to women in sport by announcing an exclusive sales period for ‘Girls Play Too 2: More Inspiring Stories of Irish Sportswomen’, the 2nd edition of a collection of stories about Ireland’s most accomplished sportswomen.
Lidl has once again teamed up with RTÉ sports broadcaster and the book’s author, Jacqui Hurley, to exclusively stock the book in all its Irish stores from Monday, 16th of August. to Sunday, September 5th, the day of the TG4 All Ireland Ladies Football Finals.
‘Girls Play Too 2’ tells the stories and celebrates the careers of another 25 of Ireland’s best-known female athletes and aims to inspire the next generation of Irish sportswomen.
The book is vividly illustrated with original drawings by five Irish female artists and provides an insight into how each of the women turned their sporting dreams into reality.
The first edition was released last year and was hailed an enormous success.
Spanning multiple international and domestic sports, the book includes the stories of Dublin Ladies’ Gaelic Football stalwart, Sinéad Goldrick and Olympic sprinter, Phil Healy along with a whole host of Irish sports stars including Olympians and Paralympians, All-Ireland champions, rugby and soccer internationals and Cheltenham heroes among others.
The exclusive sales window forms part of Lidl’s commitment to supporting and championing women in sport, as demonstrated by their long-term partnership with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and support for the 20×20 Women in sport campaign as well as our own Women in Sport initiatives on Sport for Business.
The retailer recently announced an investment of over €375k in local LGFA clubs stemming from their Lidl Plus stamp card initiative earlier this year and also continue to support the LGFA at all levels of the game through initiatives such as the #SeriousSupport Schools Programme and One Good Club™ Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme.
The partnership with the LGFA has seen Lidl invest over €5m in Ladies Gaelic football since its inception in 2016.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to have the second edition of Girls Play Too hitting the shelves in Lidl,” said Hurley.
“It is an honour to be able to tell the stories of so many incredible athletes and I hope this book can inspire future generations of female athletes and help to continue the shift towards female athletes getting the respect and recognition they deserve.”
“Between Kellie Harrington at the Olympics, Rachael Blackmore at Cheltenham, and many more stand out performances from Irish female athletes this year, the future is certainly looking bright. Thank you to Lidl for backing this project again and for always keeping women in sport on the main agenda.”
“I’m truly honoured to be one of the athletes included in the second edition of Girls Play Too,” added Dublin’s All-Ireland and All-Star winning defender, Sinéad Goldrick.
“I was lucky to have some great role models to look up to when I was growing up but you wouldn’t necessarily see them on TV or read about them in books. Thankfully this is not the case anymore and I’m sure many more girls will be inspired by the stories in Jacqui’s wonderful series of books.”
“I’m also delighted to see Lidl involved in this project again – having personal experience of the commitment they give to the LGFA and women in sport in general, it’s great to see them supporting the Girls Play Too series.”
Join us tomorrow morning for an exclusive interview with Jacqui Hurley about her motivation behind the book and her experience of bringing us the Olympic Games live from the very hot rooftop of a Tokyo Shopping Centre…
‘Girls Play Too 2: More Inspiring Stories of Irish Sportswomen’ is exclusively available in all Lidl stores nationwide for only €12.99 until the 5th of September – just in time to inspire children as they prepare to go back to school.
