The draw for the Quarter-Finals of the All Ireland Men’s Football Championship has been made this morning, following a weekend of drama during which the season and the Championship burst into life.
The Mayo Derry game in Castlebar may have started slowly but ended in a riot of excitement, tension, and drama. Mayo came out as the vanquished, as has become a regular occurrence over the last decade. Once again, conceding a late point to tie the game, missing a scorable free in extra time because there was no left-footed player on the field, and then succumbing to a penalty shootout that went all the way to the final kick.
It was electric.
Derry’s reward is a Quarter-Final appearance against Kerry, which neither side will relish, but neutral fans certainly will.
Louth were the other drama winners of the weekend, overcoming Cork in a game that also went to a final seconds placed ball finish but which Louth converted for the first time into the Quarter-Final stage in recent memory.
Commentary that it was the greatest day in the Wee County’s history may be an overstatement, with All Ireland wins in 1910, 1912 and 1957, one more than Donegal or Roscommon, respectively.
There was something unique about the game, though, as can be seen in the picture above, with both Cork and Louth carrying the Sports Direct logo on their shirts. we think that might be a Championship first.
Louth will now play against the latter of those, while Roscommon’s reward for their defeat of Tyrone is a Quarter Final match up against Armagh.
The last of the four games will see Dublin take on Galway.
Next weekend, all four games will be played in Croke Park, with two on Saturday and two on Sunday.
Roscommon and Armagh on Saturday will be followed by Dublin and Galway at 6-15, and then on Sunday, Donegal and Louth will precede Kerry and Derry
