Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.
This weekend, we highlight action in Women’s Rugby and Football, Munster Hurling, Leinster Football and Hockey .
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by Dublin City Council, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and supporters of our coverage of Local Authority and Sports Partnership Coverage.
Beibhinn Parsons
The credit is for the whole of the team who put on a sparkling performance to put up 57 points on Italy, but for Connacht’s finest to score a first half hat trick on such a special occasion for the province, makes this one for her in particular, in front of a crowd of over 9,000.
Republic of Ireland Women’s Football
Over 18,000 of a crowd at the Aviva Stadium for a back to back victory over Poland and with two games to go in the Nations League, doubling up as a qualifier for next year’s Women’s World Cup, Carla Wards team have straight qualification completely in their own hands. It would require wins over France away and the Netherlands in Cork in six weeks time but what more could we ask for.
Northern Ireland Women’s Football
First goals in green for Ellie Mason, Natalie Johnson and Leyla McFarland meant back to back wins for Northern Ireland in their Nations League B Qualifiers as well, over Malta, and settinmg them up for a shot at a World Cup Play Off later this year as well.
Westmeath Football
Meath were favourites to win the Leinster Men’s Football Championship but that all turned to dust against neighbours Westmeath who continued their rich vein of scoring with another four goals to the five they had scored against Longford in the Preliminary round. Dreams of the Paudie O’Sé era when they last won the Provincial title beatling Dublin on the way at Croke Park will be coursing through Mullingar and all points of the county.
Galway United
Galway United remain undefeated and top of the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division after defeating Treaty United in front of the TG4 cameras on Saturday.
Loreto Hockey
Loreto were officially crowned EY Hockey League Winners today at Loreto Beaufort against the backdrop of their centenary celebrations, with the fate of the six sides fighting for topflight survival finally realised.
Cork and Clare Hurling
The opening weekend of the Munster Hurling Championship set down markers for Cork and Clare scoring wins over Tipperary and Waterford respectively to start well in one of the most competitive tournaments in Irish sport.
