Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.

This weekend, we highlight action in Connacht and Munster Gaelic Football, Leinster Camogie and Ladies Football, Irish Women’s and Connacht Rugby.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by AIG, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our annual publication of 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport.

Roscommon Football

One of the best Gaelic Football games we have seen saw Galway and Roscommon trade the lead, look as though they had it won, then get pegged back, before the home side came through at the death.  It followed on from a dramatic win in similar circumstances for the Minor team on Friday night and for the U20 team last week.  It is the first time in history that Roscommon has won all three titles in one season.  Outstanding.

Connacht Rugby

Connacht Rugby kept their URC play-off hopes alive with a powerful 26-7 win over Munster Rugby in Galway. Tries from Ben Murphy, Shayne Bolton, Shamus Hurley-Langton and Sean Jansen secured a bonus-point victory in Jack Carty’s final home appearance.

Irish Women’s Rugby

Ireland women’s national rugby union team produced another encouraging Women’s Six Nations performance with a strong victory over Wales women’s national rugby union team. Ireland combined physicality and discipline throughout and will now look ahead to next weekend’s landmark meeting with Scotland at the Aviva Stadium with confidence.

Dublin Ladies Football

Dublin Ladies Gaelic Football Team produced an impressive display to defeat Meath in the Leinster Championship at Parnell Park. Dublin controlled the game with disciplined defending and efficient finishing, and will now face Kildare in the Leinster Final next Sunday at Croke Park.

Wexford Camogie

Wexford camogie delivered one of the standout camogie performances of the weekend with a hard-earned Leinster Championship win over Dublin on Friday. Trailing by 11 in the closing stages of the first half, they clawed their way back into the game before finishing stronger in extra time to win by three and stop Dublin winning a first Leinster title since 1987.

Kerry Football

Six in a row Munster titles for the reigning All-Ireland Champions was hardly a surprise, but the reason for their inclusion comes from the presentation of the newly titled Corn Phaudie Uí Sé, by Paudie’s Grandson Páidí Geaney to his Dad, and Paudie’s Son-in-Law, Paul Geaney.
