Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.

This weekend, we highlight action in Gaelic Games, Cycling, Athletics, Horse Racing and Water Polo.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by Lidl, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Women in Sport

Dublin Hurlers

Dublin topped the Leinster Round Robin Senior Hurling Championship with a victory over Kilkenny, only their second ever in Championship history.  Doing so at Parnell Park in front of a packed arena, where the fans and family were able to share the moment after, made this a very special occasion

Team Ireland Athletics

Ireland’s women secured a superb silver medal at the European 10,000m Cup in La Spezia, Italy, on Saturday evening, delivering an excellent team performance in extremely hot conditions at the Centro Sportivo Alessandro Montagna Stadium.

The Irish women’s scoring team members of Niamh Allen, Fiona Everard, and Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill combined brilliantly in the Final to finish second overall behind hosts Italy, claiming only Ireland’s second-ever medal in the history of the event, following hot on the heels of Efrem Gidey’s historic individual gold medal last year.

Kerry and Armagh Ladies Football

Kerry secured a third Munster Ladies Football title in a row with a victory over Waterford, while Armagh completed the Provincial roll of honour for 2026 with a one-point win over Tyrone in the Ulster Final.

Donegal Football

Kerry don’t lose at home in the Football Championship, until they do.  And they did on Saturday in a game that had a bit of everything, from great scores to red cards and everything in between.  Now the champions have to lick their wounds en route to the last chance saloon, while Donegal march on to the All-Ireland Quarter Finals

Offaly Hurling

It needed a Dublin win over Kilkenny and for Offaly to beat Kildare, but that is what transpired and Offaly, more recentkly of late battling relegation, are now into an All-Ireland Hurling Quarter Final

Water Polo

Galway’s Tribes made history by securing their first-ever Women’s Irish Senior Water Polo Cup title, defeating St. Vincent’s in a high-quality final that marked a repeat of the 2025 decider. In the Men’s final, North Dublin delivered a dominant performance to defeat Galway’s Corrib 15–7, claiming the Irish Senior Cup for the first time since 2017.

In the Men’s Final, North Dublin set the tone early, racing into a 6–1 first-quarter lead through goals from James Reid, Barry Nolan, Paul McMenamin, Paul Laffan and two from Luka Vuksic, with Corrib’s only response coming from Urtzi Saenz de Urturi.

Aidan O’Brien

With Gstaad and Precise, trainer Aidan O’Brien secured another Curragh Classic Double with the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas on Saturday and Sunday

Conn McDunphy

Conn McDunphy secured a superb overall success in the Rás Tailteann on Sunday.  The 29-year-old had finished second overall in 2024 on precisely the same time as the overall winner, but put that frustration to rest with a superb performance over the race, which finished in Dunboyne.
